3.1.1 School Active in the Community

The Bioma Project

Students at River Hill High School formed the River Hill Watershed Council. It was this group that created the Bioma Project. The curriculum for this project was based upon real world applications and projects. Students from River Hill High School came to Forest Ridge and facilitated the setting up of an aquarium for this project. The Bioma Project brought  a slice of Maryland's stream ecosystems into a compact 10-gallon tank for the classroom. Through this project, students gained a greater appreciation and awareness of the biodiversity of the native creeks in our local area. The tanks were  designed to include 7 different species with no more than 10-20 minutes of maintenance a week. Students took ownership of feeding the crayfish and goldfish, monitoring the temperature of the water, and taking care of the filter. This was a great hands-on approach  to learning about the ecosystem in a body of water and to learn about how diversity in our water ways is a sign of a healthy body of water.
