Students led the way for a modified “Earth Hour” on April 18, 2018. They promoted the event by making posters and announcements. During the time that the whole school had lights out, teachers held community circles to discuss ways to help protect the Earth or to share a theme-related read aloud.

Lights Out at the Ridge
Grades K - 5
2018 - 2019 - 750 students

Light Off is a program our Green Ambassadors initiated and has become a standard every year at FRES. Green Ambassadors at FRES initiated a Lights Out endeavor to help our school save energy. This initiative brought awareness to both staff and students about how often we waste energy by leaving lights and electronic equipment on when the room is empty. Students wrote and gave announcements supporting this initiative. Students did periodic Light Off checks to alert teachers and students to how often lights were left on. Positive results were reported over the announcements as positive reinforcement for our staff members.

Lightswitch Covers
Grades K - 5
2018

Students created lightswitch covers to bring attention to the need to turn off the lights. Energy monitors were assigned to each class. The monitors reminded their classmates to turn off the lights when they left the classroom or when the lights were not needed.
