2.3 Solid Waste Reduction

The Last Straw Project

Grades K - 5

1/25/2018 - 6/2018    750 students

Through researching the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, students learned that plastic straws are a major component of the pollution in our oceans and on our beaches. It was decided that we as a student body should act on this problem. Baseline data was gathered to find out how many straws our students used in a day. That information was extrapolated to what it would mean for a year. Students were invited to make posters to show just how many straws were being dumped into our environment just by our school. Students made a visual to hang in the cafeteria to serve as a reminder how big a pollution problem straws could be.  Our student Green Ambassadors wrote informative blurbs that went into our FRES newsletter to engage our community into The Last Straw campaign as well.

FRES celebrates every Friday as a Trash-Free Friday to help prevent so much trash from going in to our landfills.  Students strive to bring lunches with as little waste as possible, and each grade level gets their trash weighed at the end of the lunch shift.  Our Green Team Ambassadors help students from each grade to sort trash and recycling items when it is clean up time.  Students report changes in the trash weight monthly and encourage each grade level to use less trash.

Plastic Bag Tax

On Monday, November 19, 2019, students from our school attended the County Council meeting in support of CB64, a tax on plastic bag use. Students made posters and gave testimony in support of the bill.

Community Clean Up

March 13, 2021

"Just because we are in a pandemic, doesn't mean we can't keep our environment clean." This is what one of our students said when thinking about how to take care of our Earth. This led to the idea of a Community Clean Up - not at schooll, which we have done in the past, but in your own yards, parks, and community. Students wrote a letter to our administration. The idea was approved. Please click on Community Clean Up Flyer to see what was posted in our FRES newsletter.
