2.4 Habitat Restoration

Grade 5  Oyster Restoration Project Spring 2018

Our 5th grade students worked together with a couple staff members from the  Coastal Conservation Association to create and restore oyster habitats. Students learned about the importance of oysters in our bay. They learned that oysters act as a filter for our bay to make it healthier. Students learned a little bit about the history of oysters and the oysters’ role in the ecosystem. They also learned about the decrease in oyster population and the destruction of their habitat. Students then were engaged in the hands-on task of creating an oyster reef ball which would be installed in the Chesapeake Bay and serve as a habitat to grow oysters. From putting the molds together, to inflating balls to create gaps in the mold, to mixing up concrete and shoveling it into the molds, and finally “hatching” the molds, and loading up the truck – students were engaged in every task of constructing an oyster reef ball. This was an outstanding opportunity for students to contribute to the health of our bay and learn about environmental stewardship. They learned that they can make a difference!

Project Feeder Watch

Students created and continue to monitor a bird habitat area with food, shelter, and water sources. Students participate in Project Feeder Watch each year. We are provided seed from Mother Nature’s, one of our environmental partners.

"Project Feeder Watch is a super fun seminar for bird lovers and anyone who's interested. You get to learn and do fun projects about birds.

Bird watching was one of my favorite activities. All you had to do was take a pair of binoculars, and go to the back of the school to recognize any birds that were flying! Plus,

Mrs. Clawson will teach you how to properly use binoculars.

I also enjoyed helping the birds a bit too! There are bird feeders that you can fill with seeds that birds eat, and hang them in special places that the birds will enjoy! Cleaning and making the birdhouses habitable for birds was pretty fun too!

So let's say you don’t know much about birds, and you want to learn more about their traits, appearance, and everything in between. No problem!

Mrs. Clawson will show websites, videos, and articles that will help you learn more about birds! You’ll get a booklet with birds and facts that are interesting to learn!"
